Gore’s vision

No doubt you’ve seen or heard snippets of Al Gore’s latest vision – to eliminate our use of carbon-based fuels in 10 years. The speech can be seen here:

This is a grand vision and indeed probably unrealistic. But to the naysayers I say this: Al Gore has become a strong leader in recent years not for the nuance of his policies, but for his ability to broadcast a message widely and rally a cause. Here, he has once again grasped an important concept that undoubtedly will be mocked but is important nonetheless – that societies need a vision they can see and anything beyond 10 years is simply beyond our collective line of sight. Here, Gore has taken the biggest challenges of our generation and presented them in a way that can inspire and capture the imagination of its constituents. Like the space race, we can yearn for the day our society pulls together to achieve our goals. Even if we only get to 50% carbon-free by 2018, that will have been an extraordinary leap from Business as Usual. Why not set our sights high?
